Buttonwood Stables

Buttonwood Stables is located on Hilliard's Bridge Road.  It was built in 1790 by the Hilliard Family.  Although the son, Franklin, was the town pharmacist, the property was family operated as a cow farm.  The subsequent owners, the Simon's, also maintained the property as a cow farm for many years.

The farm has been known as Buttonwood Stables for over 20 years and has been a working horse farm since those days.

The majority of the old red barn is original with its peg and beam construction and original barn board.  The earliest part of the house maintains its original exposed yellow pine floors as well as three corner fireplaces; two downstairs and one in an upstairs bedroom.  Many windows are still the old "wavy" glass.

The peace of the early days surely permeates the property as many boarders have remarked that riding under the rising moon and stars at Buttonwoon relieves stress better than any other potion.

Some of us even like to go out into the pastures when the horses are in the barn for a "trail ride."
